EUROPEAN ROULETTE, THE GAME
The game of Roulette traces its origin to England in the early 1700s in a game called Roly Poly. It featured black and white spots with no numbers. The French redesigned it in the late 1700s to include numbers. Original American wheels had 31 numbers plus a 0, 00, and an American Eagle for the third zero number (the 000). Today's European roulette wheels usually have only one zero while most American wheels have a zero and a double zero. Both the American and European modern wheels have 36 numbers. Roulette is the most popular casino game in Europe.
Players, usually up to eight, play against the house represented by the croupier, who spins the roulette wheel and handles the wagers and payouts. The European wheel has 37 slots representing 36 numbers and one zero.
To play roulette, you place your bet or bets on numbers (any number including the zero and double) in the table layout or on the outside and when everybody at the table has placed their bets, the croupier starts the spin and launches the ball. Just a few moments before the ball is about to drop over the slots, the croupier says 'no more bets'. From that moment no one is allowed to place - or change - their bets until the ball drops on a slot. After the croupier places the dolly on the winning number on the roulette table and clears all the losing bets. You can start placing your new bets while the croupier pays the winners. The winners are those bets that are on or around the number that comes up. Also the bets on the outside of the layout win if the winning number is represented. There are many different ways to place roulette bets. Each bet covers a different set of numbers and has a different distribution, as shown in the "Winnings Table" section.
You can Bet on any number, including the 0, by placing a chip on the center of a number.
You can Bet on two numbers by placing a chip on the line that divides the two numbers.
You can Bet on three numbers by placing a chip on the left line on the edge of the roulette table, next to the line corresponding to the three numbers.
You can Bet on four numbers by placing the chips on the corner where the four numbers meet.
You can Bet on the numbers 0, 00, 1, 2, and 3 by placing the chip on the internal line on the left edge between 0 and 1.
There are three boxes indicated "2 to 1" at the bottom of the column of numbers. You can place the bets for all these numbers by placing the chips in one of these boxes. If any of the numbers in your column come up you will win 2 to 1; 0 and 00 are losing numbers.
You can Bet on a group of twelve numbers by placing the chip in one of the three boxes indicated "1st 12," "2nd 12," or "3rd 12." If one of the twelve numbers comes up, the win will be 2 to 1; 0 and 00 are losing numbers.
You can place a bet in one of the boxes on the left, long side of the table that covers half of the roulette table numbers (excluding the 0 and 00). Each box covers 18 numbers. You win even money (1 to 1) on all of these bets; 0 and 00 are losing numbers.
The winning number display shows the results of the previous 13 spins.
